Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday said that Maharishi Valmiki, through his immortal epic, the Ramayana, showed society the path of ideals, righteousness, and compassion.
Gupta announced that from now on Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti will be observed as a public holiday in Delhi every year, allowing citizens to celebrate the festival with full devotion and enthusiasm.

She further informed that, for the first time, the Delhi Government has extended support to a large number of organisations to ensure that this year’s celebrations are held on a historic scale across the capital.
Speaking during an event on Valmiki Jayanti Mahotsav, Gupta said that his life symbolizes a just and harmonious society where every section progresses together and every individual’s contribution is valued.
Referring to the stories of Shabari’s berries, Kevat’s boat, and the squirrel’s effort, she said these episodes remind us that no individual is insignificant, and that every contribution plays a vital role in building a better society.
Delhi ministers Ravindra Indraj Singh and Kapil Mishra, NDMC chairperson Keshav Chandra, Vice-Chairperson Kuljeet Chahal, MLAs, and others also attended the events on the occasion of Valmiki Jayanti.
Praising the NDMC’s decision to regularise approximately 4,500 employees, the CM described it as a progressive step that reinforces the principles of equality, dignity, and social justice.
She said that this decision not only safeguards the rights of employees, but also provides them with stability and respect in society.
The CM further stated that under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government is working in accordance with the mantra “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas,” and emphasised that the goal is to ensure basic facilities such as education, healthcare, housing, and that employment reaches the last person in society, so that no citizen is left behind.
“Delhi’s progress is possible only when every section of society advances equally,” she said.
Highlighting the government’s vision to establish Delhi as the “Cultural Capital of India,” Gupta said that the city is celebrating all faiths and traditions from Kanwar Yatra and Ramlila to Durga Puja and Valmiki Jayanti with equal respect and grandeur.
“In Delhi today, every religion and every tradition is being honoured equally and this is the true vision of Ram Rajya,” she said
